The History of the Blazer Badges / Bullion Patches –  19th Century

This is another special kind of patches. Blazer Badges are Hand embroidered. They are, however, thicker and firmer than a regular embroider patch. Their additional materials are Bullion wire , metallic threads, felt, velvet, and beads.

Tracing the exact history of the blazer badge is difficult because there are many stories about how the blazer and its badges came to be.

  • One story says that the blazer started as a rowing jacket in the early 1800s, worn by members of St. John’s College, Cambridge. These jackets were called blazers because of their bright red color, which looked like a “blaze” when worn by the rowers
  • Another story points to the Captain of HMS Blazer, who, in 1837, dressed his crew in dark blue jackets with brass buttons to impress Queen Victoria . This style became the navy blazer we know today.

The blazer badge usually worn on the pocket , gives the wearer a chance to show membership in a group or add a personal touch.
